Exploring the city

With Peebles being only 26 miles from the capital city of Scotland and serviced by great local bus company (Border Buses) running two buses every hour with the last bus leaving Edinburgh at 23.30pm you can plan your day to explore the historical sites, sample the bars/cafes, enjoy dinner in the capital or even fit in a trip to the theater or take in the famous Edinburgh Military
Tattoo.

To see and do

Harry Potter walking tour of Edinburgh
Super comprehensive, starts at Greyfriars Bobby statue by the National Museum of Scotland on most days (check the website). You tip the guide as much as you like, otherwise it’s free. House points are awarded to those who answer the questions right!

National Museum of Scotland
Huge and impressive building with tonnes of exhibitions. The Victorian gallery is worth going alone. Totally free, except exhibitions.

National Galleries
There are several for all kinds of art, all around the city. Look ‘em up if that’s your kind of thing!

Edinburgh Castle
Overrated in my honest opinion, and not one of the prettiest castles in Scotland. Plus, it’s dear. But worth going if you like military history, great views and doing touristy things.

Scott Monument
Scotland is great at making ugly but impressive buildings. This is one of them. A great gothic sculptural tower on Princes Street, it’s worth the £4 to go up just to see the views (it’s super windy though) and learn about Sir Walter Scott, who was hugely influential on Scottish literature and culture.

Camera Obscura
Several floors of hilarious optical illusions, I would definitely recommend doing this!

Scotch Whisky Experience
This is probably designed for all the American tourists that flood Edinburgh every year, but it’s the main one in town and you’ll find an interesting and informative map of whisky flavours in the shop.

Edinburgh Gin
Book a gin distillery tour.

Camera Obscura
Several floors of hilarious optical illusions, I would definitely recommend doing this!
